Why did you choose this painting?

At Thingyan 2010, there was a bomb explosion near Kandawgyi Kanpat Road. In my entire life, nothing like that had happened before. As I live on Bagaya Street, Sanchaung, I heard it clearly. During Thingyan, I usually take photos from my home on the sixth floor. I gain a different perspective on people moving about. At the time of the explosion I had a camera ready, so I managed to take some photos of sudden changes among the people down below. They started to worry if a bomb might explode in their neighbourhood. They became silent. They didn’t dare continue their journeys. They called to their children. They went to offer help. Photojournalists who did that were arrested. In other countries, journalists take photos and people offer help in times of terrorism and natural disaster. In Myanmar, though, everyone near the explosion was arrested on suspicion of complicity. When I discussed my Milan show with the curator, I decided to relate my paintings to this subject as much as possible. That’s why this painting rings a bell for me. It shows municipal workers going around in Thingyan. They were dressed in municipal uniforms and looked happy on their truck until they heard about the bomb explosion. Then they could no longer carry on with their journey.

Has Myanmar changed in the past decade?

I believe the changes in the decade from the old to the new government are not visible enough. It’s hard to say what changes I want to see. Even in a country like America, where democracy and human rights are respected, the issues in 2020 are like movie scenes. So it’s difficult for us to give our opinion.

Has life for you as a painter changed in the past decade?

At home, I’m not regarded as an artist. I rarely do shows in Myanmar. I don’t think of paintings as my lifeblood. I create them when I have a desire or inspiration. On the other hand, I do make sculptures, photo-based art, installation art and films. I always change my mind when it comes to art. Back then, I sold a lot of paintings from the ‘We Are Moving’ series. Some were bought by the world-renowned collector Uli Sigg. But I think it’s boring to keep making one style of artwork. I believe we should create and make changes based on a concept, a place, our age and our surroundings.
