Aung Win was born in Kyaukse, Mandalay Region in 1949. He studied painting at the
State School of Fine Arts, Mandalay from 1965 to 1968, and in the mid-1970s became
famous for paintings depicting elephant dancing in his native Kyaukse. He stopped
painting for about two decades when the art market dried up, instead turning to mural
paintings in monasteries and pagodas. He returned to the art scene in 2012.
