Why did you choose this painting?

You can view this scene through the windows of Lokanat Gallery. There used to be street vendors selling old books. When I was young, there were long rows of bookshops on Pansodan and 37^th Streets. It was known as the university of the street. As my family struggled financially, I worked for the vendors from seventh grade. My school ran from seven in the morning to twelve noon. I came here as soon as I finished and went home in the evening. At art school I earned money by working in bookshops. I helped them set up and carry their books. I also helped sell books. I was very happy then. I loved the place and also read a lot. As I grew up with that, I used it for my paintings. When a Yangon municipal law prohibited street vendors, most bookshops disappeared from Pansodan. The bookshops in front of the Hindu temple went too. Pansodan is no longer such a special place.

Has Myanmar changed in the past decade?

The government we didn’t support has gone. A government we do support has replaced it. Still, some changes are slow. Even if you work on a painting, it takes time. For a country, some reforms will certainly take time. Five years is nothing like enough. Vendors are at a disadvantage because they can’t sell on the street anymore. Other people have been harmed by other reforms. But there have been many changes. Some things are much better.

Has life for you as a painter changed in the past decade?

I’m not a successful artist. I’m just a painter. Since 2016, I haven’t sent my paintings to galleries. I developed a bad relationship with them. In our country, artists who aren’t famous aren’t treated with respect. Maybe they think that if they don’t take our paintings we’ll starve. I didn’t like it when they delayed paying me. But I carried on painting and joined group shows. I get some income from independent collectors. I also work for a French company.

မင်းကျော်စွာ

ဒီပန်းချီကားကို ဘာလို့ ရွေးတာလဲ။

လောကနတ်ပန်းချီပြခန်းရဲ့ ပြတင်းပေါက်ကနေ လှမ်းကြည့်လိုက်ရင် ဒီနေရာကို တွေ့တယ်။ အရင်တုန်းက စာအုပ်အဟောင်းတန်းလေးက ဒီနားမှာ ရှိတယ်။ ကျနော်တို့ငယ်ငယ်တုန်းက ပန်းဆိုးတန်းလမ်းနဲ့ ၃၇လမ်းမှာ စာအုပ်တန်း အကြီးကြီးရှိတယ်။ စာအုပ်အဟောင်းတန်းကို လမ်းဘေးတက္ကသိုလ်လို့ ခေါ်ကြတယ်။ ကျနော့် မိသားစုက ငွေကြေး မပြည့်စုံတော့ ခုနှစ်တန်းလောက်တည်းက စာအုပ်တန်းမှာ အလုပ်လုပ်ပြီး ကျောင်းတက်ရတယ်။ ကျောင်းက မနက်ပိုင်း ခုနှစ်နာရီကနေ နေ့လယ်ဆယ့်နှစ်နာရီဆိုတော့ ကျောင်းဆင်းတာနဲ့ စာအုပ်တန်းကိုလာတယ်။ ညနေပြန်တယ်။ ပန်းချီကျောင်းတက်တော့လည်း စာအုပ်ဆိုင်တွေမှာ အလုပ်လုပ်ရင်း ကျောင်းတက်ခဲ့ရတယ်။ စာအုပ်တွေ အသယ်အပို့လုပ်ပေးတယ်၊ ထမ်းပို့ရတယ်။ အားတဲ့အချိန်တွေ လာရောင်းတယ်။ စာအုပ်အဟောင်းတန်းမှာ ရှိခဲ့စဉ်က သိပ်ပျော်တယ်။ ကျနော်က စာအုပ်တန်းကိုလည်း ချစ်တယ်။ စာအုပ်တွေလည်း ဖတ်တယ်။ စာအုပ်တန်းနဲ့ ကြီးပြင်းလာတာဆိုတော့ စာအုပ်အဟောင်းတန်းလေးတွေအကြောင်း ပန်းချီကားတော်တော်များများရေးတယ်။ ရန်ကုန်စည်ပင်သာယာဥပဒေအရ လမ်းဘေးမခင်းရဘူးဆိုတော့ ပန်းဆိုးတန်းက စာအုပ်တန်းတွေ ပျောက်ကုန်တယ်။ ဟိန္ဒူဘုရားကျောင်း အရှေ့က စာအုပ်တန်းတွေလည်းပျောက်တယ်။ ပန်းဆိုးတန်း စာအုပ်တန်းကြီးဆိုတာ သီးသန့် မရှိတော့ဘူး။

ပြီးခဲ့တဲ့ဆယ်စုနှစ်အတွင်း မြန်မာနိုင်ငံမှာ အပြောင်းအလဲတွေရှိတယ်ထင်လား။

ကျနော်တို့မထောက်ခံခဲ့တဲ့ အစိုးရတစ်ရပ်က မရှိတော့ဘူး။ ထောက်ခံခဲ့တဲ့ အစိုးရ တက်လာတယ်။ တချို့အရာတွေက နှောင့်နှေးကောင်း နှောင့်နှေးနိုင်တာပေါ့လေ။ ပန်းချီရေးရင်တောင် ပန်းချီကား တစ်ကားဖြစ်ဖို့က ကြာသေးတာကိုး။ နိုင်ငံနဲ့ ချီသွားပြီဆိုတော့ တချို့ အပြောင်းအလဲတွေက ကြာတာပေါ့။ ငါးနှစ်ဆိုရင်တောင်မှ လုံလောက်ချင်မှ လုံလောက်မှာ။ လမ်းဘေး မခင်းရတော့ဘူး ဆိုတော့ လမ်းဘေးဈေးသည်တွေ ဒုက္ခရောက်သွားတာရှိတယ်။ မူတစ်ခု ချမှတ်လိုက်ရင် ဒုက္ခရောက်တဲ့သူတော့ ရှိမှာပဲ။ ဒါပေမယ့် တော်တော်ပြောင်းလဲသွားတယ်။ တချို့အရာတွေ တော်တော်ကောင်းလာတယ်။

ပြီးခဲ့တဲ့ဆယ်စုနှစ်အတွင်း ပန်းချီဆရာတစ်ယောက်အနေနဲ့ ဘဝမှာ အပြောင်းအလဲတွေရှိလား။

ကျနော်က အောင်မြင်တဲ့ အနုပညာသမားမဟုတ်ဘူး။ ပုံရေးနေတဲ့သူတစ်ယောက်ပါပဲ။ ၂၀၁၆ နောက်ပိုင်းမှာ ဘယ်သူ့ဆီမှ ပန်းချီကားမပို့တော့ဘူး။ ကျနော်နဲ့ ပြခန်းတွေ အဆင်မပြေ ဖြစ်လာတယ်။ ကျနော်တို့ နိုင်ငံမှာ နာမည်မရှိတဲ့ ကျနော်တို့လို ပန်းချီဆရာတွေကို သူတို့က အရေးမလုပ်ကြဘူး။ ငါတို့မယူရင် ဒီကောင်တွေ ငတ်သွားမှာပဲ ဆိုတဲ့ စိတ်ထားမျိုးတွေ ရှိလားမသိဘူး။ ပိုက်ဆံရှင်းတဲ့အခါ နှောင့်နှေးနေတာက ကျနော့်အတွက် အဆင်မပြေတော့ဘူး။ ပန်းချီကားတွေ ဆက်ရေးတယ်။ group show တွေပါတယ်။ အပြင်ဝယ်လက်လေးတွေနဲ့ ရပ်တည်တယ်။ ပြင်သစ်ကုမ္ပဏီတစ်ခုမှာ ပန်းချီဆရာအဖြစ် ခြောက်လ အလုပ်လုပ်ခဲ့တယ်။ အခုတော့ ဆရာကြီး ဦးဝင်းဖေရဲ့ မန်နေဂျာလုပ်နေပါတယ်။
